L’église de Baouit a en effet une histoire toute particulière. Fondé au IVe siècle par le moine Apollo, le monastère de Baouit est prospère jusqu’au IXe siècle. Au XIIe siècle, il est abandonné puis détruit. - 🏜⛏Ce monastère situé en Moyenne-Égypte fut dégagé des sables en 1902 par l’archéologue français Jean Clédat. À la suite du partage du produit des fouilles entre l’Égypte et la France, le musée du Louvre acquiert une grande partie du décor sculpté de l’église sud. - ✨ Comme vous pouvez le voir ici, les nombreux fragments envoyés au musée furent remontés à leur place d’origine au sein d’une structure moderne, édifiée dans la section copte du département des Antiquités égyptiennes en 1997.
