🇫🇷 5e thème de cette #MuseumWeek dédiée aux femmes : les livres ! 📚 Saviez-vous que, malheureusement, l’œuvre de la grande poétesse grecque Sappho ne nous est parvenu que de manière fragmentaire ? Elle vécut de la fin du VIIe au début du VIe siècle avant J.-C, et aurait composé neuf livres de poésie lyrique. Très célèbre dans l’antiquité, plus de cent auteurs anciens la mentionnent ! Cette sculpture fut réalisée par Claude Ramey vers 1799-1800, d’après un plâtre qu’il avait présenté au Salon de 1796. Dans cette œuvre qui se réfère à la légende entourant la mort de Sappho, la poétesse tient une lettre qu'elle vient d'écrire à Phaon, avant de se jeter dans la mer par amour pour lui. - 🌎 ENG #BooksMW 📖 is the 5th theme of #MuseumWeek, which is dedicated to all women in the world this year. Did you know that, unfortunately, most of the Greek poet Sappho’s work is now lost and only incompletely known? She lived from the end of the 7th to the early 6th century BC, and is said to have written nine lyric poetry books. She was well-known and admired through much of antiquity, and more than one hundred ancient authors have written about her! This sculpture was made by Claude Ramey about 1799-1800 after a plaster model he exhibited at the 1796 Salon.
