🖼 The painting "Ulysses remet Chryséis à son père", painted around 1644, contains many significant details. The subject is taken from Homer's famous epic Iliad. It is about the return to his homeland of the beautiful Trojan Chryséis, a prisoner of the Greeks. Agamemnon, Greek hero and leader of the Achaeans, gives a black ship to Ulysses to bring the young woman back. -
⛵️ The "black boat" of the Iliad, stopped in the port near the temple of Apollo, is the real protagonist of the scene. Boldly installed at the very centre of the composition, it stands out, hiding the sun. The vanishing lines of the architecture converge on it. - 🔍 The eponymous subject of the painting takes place in the background, almost unnoticed at first because it is so small: on the steps of the palace on the left, the high priest Chryses receives his daughter from the hands of Ulysses. -
